In general usage today, the phrase “chess games” usually refers to actual periods of play in which two chess players vie to win the game. A challenge or competition is often referred to as a “game of chess”.
However, sometimes the phrase refers to the board game of chess itself, or more correctly referred to as a “chess set” – the physical field upon which thirty-two chess pieces are placed. The relationships of the pieces are manipulated throughout the game by each player, taking turns until the end of the game. There are a huge variety of chess sets. They range in style from the classic style designed in the 1800s, to highly stylized medieval versions, to television themed sets, and much, much more.
Chess sets are widely available throughout the world. You can easily find them in game stores, toy stores, supermarkets, online stores, even art galleries, convenience stores, and so on. Prices range from a few dollars for a basic board made of cardboard with plastic pieces, to hundreds or thousands of dollars for sets made of carved wood, marble, glass, and so on. You can make a chess set out of virtually any material.
It should be noted that there exists a three-dimensional version of chess. There are three levels to this version, stacked one on top of the other on top of the other. The pieces can move from level to level in a single move if the player wishes. This can be an interesting new twist on the game, and is an attractive piece of modernist sculpture in its own right!
