The infamous “nanny-cam” has caught more than a few nasty nannies, who were ignoring the young children in their charge, or worse, abusing them. The tapes made the rounds of various news programs on TV and a new industry was born. Now there are wireless, battery operated cameras hidden in common household items like radios, and planters that an unsuspecting nanny would never find. As technology improves and electronic items get smaller and better, hidden security cameras will become more readily available than they are today.

Available widths are 1 ½ inch, 2 inch and 2 ¼ inch. Though plank flooring is sold in two thicknesses, width can range between 3 inches and 8 inches. Parquet flooring has geometrical patterns that are created with wood slats.

Hand-scraped hardwood floors are hand crafted. Character markings on handscraped hardwood floors (hand sculptured floors) are a unique feature. These floors offer the best finishes for either the modern world look or the old reclaimed wood floor look. Both engineered and solid hand sculpted floors are sold. Beautiful handscraped hardwood floors are very expensive. Engineered handscraped hardwood floors are best suited for a structure erected on a concrete slab and in high humidity conditions. A few companies also market distressed hardwood flooring that has machine made markings unlike hand made markings in handscraped hardwood floor. Handscraped floor is costlier than distressed version, but both floorings offer a rich look.

Hardwood floors should be cleaned with products recommended by the manufacturer. Regular use of a vacuum cleaner will clean dirt, mud, grit and small stones that may spoil the finish. Welcome mats at the entrance for wiping feet before walking on the floor are of great help in protecting the finish. When choosing furniture for you home, do not buy products with sharp metal or wooden legs to prevent denting and scratching. Use of furniture coasters or felt protectors for all legs will prevent scratching. Non-staining and wide rubber cups are a must for heavy items like piano. The use of a paste wax on the hardwood floor with a polyurethane finish damages the finish. Spills on hardwood floors need immediate attention. Clean them with a paper towel or damp white cloth and dry the area.

A Look at Portable Dishwashers

Portable dishwashers are just the ticket for those with less than enough space for a more permanent and heavier dishwasher. They range in widths from a slim 18 inches to a maximum of about 24 inches for the “larger” portables. In general, they are also less expensive. They usually run anywhere from $200 to $500, rather than to $600 or more as with permanent units.

Portable dishwashers have wheels on them. You can roll your portable dishwasher to the storeroom if you don’t plan on using it for a while (and would rather opt for hand-washing). It’s also much easier to maneuver, for those who plan on moving to a new home in the near future.

A Look at Embroidery Sewing Machines

With the rapid advancement in technology for electric sewing machines a machine for every type of stitch was being born. It took several tries, however, to come up with a machine that could handle the task of embroidery.

Thomas Stone and James Henderson were granted a French patent in 1804 for “a machine that emulated hand sewing.” That same year a patent was granted to Scott John Duncan for an “embroidery machine with multiple needles.” The machines of all three men were unsuccessful and never came to being. It wasn’t until 1860, that Isaak Groebli combined previous hand looming techniques with existing sewing machine technology to create the first embroidery sewing machine.

The technology advanced greatly in 1911 when the Singer Sewing Company developed the first multi-head embroidery sewing machine with six heads and a pantograph attachment. It wasn’t until the 1950s that more advancements were introduced and technology continued to advance with computerization. During this decade, advancements in the sale of licensing rights and mass-merchandising opened up the market for factory-based embroidered items. Today embroidery sewing machines are used every day worldwide, some with up to thirty different heads, though most jobs require only the smaller machines.

Industrial sewing machines, like their domestic counterparts for the home seamstress, were created to simplify and speed up the otherwise labor-intensive hand stitching. Higher-end sewing machine models developed for the home often feature a hoop attachment and an embroider stitch mode. Crafters and seamstresses, who would use this feature, were frequently frustrated at having to constantly change out the different thread colors. Today’s advanced embroider sewing machines feature single or multi-heads for different spools of thread and are as easily available to the home seamstress as to the large garment factory. Many machine-embroidered items are created in small home-based businesses with affordable, easy-to-use, computer-operated embroidery sewing machines that do not require a lot of room. Specialized attachments allow for embroidery to be added to a variety of pre-manufactured products and fabrics, as well as the addition of sequins and other fancy enhancements.

A Look at Electronic Air Filters

Many people mistakenly assume that an air conditioning only controls the temperature of a living space. Air conditioning also involves the cleanliness of the air. Filtration is an excellent way to accomplish air cleaning and provide enhanced levels of comfort to a building’s occupants. Continuous exposure to unfiltered air results in asthma, allergies, and breathing problems. Generally, air-conditioning systems include electronic air filters, which use electrical charges to attract and deposit 95% of household allergens and irritants to the human body. An electronic air cleaner is installed between the furnace and the air ducts to improve indoor air filtration throughout the home.

The air inside the home circulates through the cooling system, carrying millions of airborne particles with it. When this air is drawn into the system or device, a pre-filter in the electronic filter traps the majority of the allergens and irritants. Those particles that do pass through the pre-filter receive an electric charge inside the filter. Collector plates of the filter attract these particles and hold them until the cells are cleaned. Electronic air cleaners offer the optimum balance between air filtration and system pressure drop (air restriction).

There are two main types of electronic filters, namely electrostatic precipitators and charged media filters. In electrostatic precipitators, particles are collected on a series of charged plates, whereas in charged media filter devices, the particles are collected on the charged fibers of the filter. The most efficient filters are electrostatic precipitator, because in most of the electrostatic precipitators, the particles are deliberately ionized (charged) before the collection process, resulting in higher collection efficiency. These precipitators generate approximately 20,000 volts to give dust particles a static electric charge.

In order to determine the efficiency of an electronic air filter, there are two tests: the weight-arrestance test and the atmospheric dust-spot test. In the weight-arrestance test, the efficiency is tested on the basis of the weight of the dirt removed by the filter. However, this method will not give any idea as to the removal of smaller dirt particulate, which can be easily inhaled by lungs. The atmospheric dust-spot test determines a filter’s ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 6 microns. Whatever test is used and whatever may be the type used, the electronic filter must be cleaned at least once in a month to improve the indoor air quality.

For those people thinking of becoming an electrician, there are a variety of schools, institutes and training centers where you can get a good education and launch your career the right way.

There are government-sponsored programs, military training programs, and online courses that lead to certification, electrical contractor sponsored training centers and other electrician schools where you can be taught the complexities of installing and maintaining everything electric. As is always the case, the first thing you have to do is to decide what direction you wish to go in after the training is over, you’ve gotten your certification and you want to earn some money.

For some, starting their own business is the first bold step they take after school. They learn the skills necessary to do home repairs or commercial maintenance, buy some equipment, open up a small shop or operate out of their houses, do a bit of advertising and slowly but surely the phone calls start coming and the work begins.

For these entrepreneurially minded people, it is not necessary to take the more advanced courses to perform specific, highly-focused electrical work. For these people a broad knowledge of the ins and outs of electricity and houses is all they need to know, combined with some business courses that teach about starting your own business, basic bookkeeping procedures and the like. Still others want to learn everything that they can while in school and somewhere during the instruction they discover a passion for a specific area of expertise and they start moving in that direction.

Upon graduation from certain electrician schools, you can work immediately in positions such as panel builders and testers, utility maintenance mechanics, construction electricians, and electronic technicians. Studies include the basic wiring and electrical layout schematics used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Successful graduates will have been schooled in electrical system service and maintenance and trained in motors, electrical controls and transformer applications.

All of the knowledge and skills needed for entry level positions as electricians and apprentices for new construction, additions and restorations can be quickly learned and immediately put into practice if the student is dedicated.
