A Guide To Diamond Earrings

The word ‘diamond’ is derived from an ancient Greek work meaning “impossible to tame.” Diamonds are one of the best-known forms of carbon. They have been used as gems from time immemorial and have a wide variety of industrial applications. The popularity of diamonds increased in the 19th century because of improved cutting and polishing techniques. The quality of the diamond is usually judged by the four C’s, referring to carat, clarity, color and cut.

Diamond earrings are a personal adornment worn attached to the ear lobe. Egyptians initiated the fashion of earrings by first wearing large gold hoops, which eventually grew smaller and also contained a pendant. In Babylonia and Assyria, men used to wear earrings as a sign of position. The Romans were connoisseurs of earrings set with precious stones. In the 18th century the diamond earring became more fashionable, and the 19th century witnessed the extensive use of the cameo.

Two basic types of diamond earrings exist. Diamond post and diamond wire earrings are for pierced ears, while diamond clips are for non-pierced ears. Post earrings use a clutch, nut or some other means to support it in the ear. Post earrings with a solitary diamond at the end are called stud earrings. Wire earrings like fish hooks and kidney wires use a differently shaped small wire that slips through the pierced ear to hold the earrings in place. Sometimes a hook at the back is used as an additional support. In the clip earrings a hinged clip clasps the earring in the ear lobe.

Diamond earrings vary in style, price range, size and weight. The diamond may be set with other diamonds or precious stones like emeralds, rubies and sapphires in yellow, white or red gold, silver, rhodium or platinum. There are infant and baby earrings as small as 0.06 carat, which is a 2-millimeter diamond in each ear, available for $49. On the other hand, some earrings set in platinum with an 18K princess-cut diamond are priced over $5,000, and can be as expensive as $20,000.

Elegant and sophisticated, diamond earrings have always been considered a favorite piece of jewelry with women.

A Guide to Bird Cages for Sale

As overwhelming as picking out a pet bird can be, picking a bird cage can be even more so. There are so many options available. Sizes range from mere inches to several feet. Styles range from a simple square box to an elaborate house. Materials, too, can vary greatly—iron, stainless steel, aluminum, acrylic, wooden, brass, and wire are all available.

You even have choices in where to buy your bird cage. A large variety of bird cages can be found at chain pet stores, such as PetsMart or PetCo. Department stores also offer some bird cages for sale. Sometimes, discount stores like Dollar General or Family Dollar will sell bird cages.

Online pet stores also sell bird cages. In comparing online store prices to brick and mortar store prices, be sure to weigh in the shipping charges and any applicable taxes.

You can also find bird cages for sale in the newspaper, at flea markets, and at garage sales. These used bird cages are generally safe to use, but they should be disinfected first. Do not buy used wooden bird cages—these are difficult to clean and could be dangerous for your bird.

In addition to the mass produced bird cages for sale, you can also order a custom bird cage. Though this will be much more expensive, it also allows more control over design.

No matter where you decide to purchase your bird cage, keep in mind the cage’s two main functions: keeping the bird safe and keeping the bird happy. To accomplish this, you should buy the largest cage you can afford that will safely accommodate your type of bird.

A Guide to Bird Cage Covers

As much as you love the sound of your new little bird, you probably don’t want to hear it at the crack of dawn. If your feathered friend’s morning song is interrupting your sleep, you might want to buy a bird cage cover. Though not an absolute necessity, covers have some definite advantages.

First of all, a bird cage cover blocks the cool air, keeping your bird warmer in the winter. It also blocks some sound, and may help your bird rest easier. Perhaps most importantly, the bird cage cover keeps out the light, persuading your bird to sleep until you are ready to wake up. This can help you—and your bird—get some much needed rest.

Though any material could work in theory, it is best to buy a cover that is made for bird cages. Otherwise, you run the risk of your bird becoming tangled in the material. You also need a cover that is washable.

Bird cage covers are available at most pet supply stores. They can also be ordered online. If you prefer, you can make your own bird cage cover. This will enable you to choose a fabric that matches your home. If you go this route, make sure that you choose a material that is washable and that will not entangle your bird.

If you choose to use a bird cage cover, try to use it roughly the same hours each day. Like most people, birds need a routine to feel safe, happy, and secure.

A Guide to Beauty Salon Equipment

Beauty salon equipment is a broad term that applies to various pieces of equipment all having uniquely different functions within the beauty industry. The type of beauty salon equipment found within a salon’s doors is best determined by what services the salon offers its clients.

Most beauty salons offer basic hair cutting and hair styling services. The basic beauty salon equipment necessary to provide these services consists of hair styling chairs, wash basins, hair dryers and supply trolleys. Basic types of salon equipment are available through a large number of suppliers that offer it at a low cost. This “low end” type of beauty salon equipment is simplistic with no added features that can be costly.

Due to popular demand, many salons are expanding to offer day spa services to their clients. Day spa services aim to pamper the client and assist them in the pursuit of mental relaxation. Day spa services often include manicures, pedicures, tanning, skin care, waxing, and massage. These services all require the use of specific equipment. This beauty salon equipment is also readily available through a variety of suppliers, many of whom have elaborate e-commerce Web sites and online catalogs that allow a customer to make quick cost comparisons between suppliers.

Day spa equipment tends to include various features that enhance client comfort and provide relaxation. The cost of day spa equipment can be extremely varied. When purchased new, items such as tanning booths, tanning beds, and pedicure spas can cost thousands of dollars. To save money, a salon owner may choose to purchase used beauty salon equipment. There are many suppliers who specialize only in offering quality used beauty salon equipment. If a consumer conducts sufficient product research and ensures they are purchasing used beauty salon equipment from a reputable supplier, they can obtain equipment at tremendous cost savings. The money saved can then be invested in their business and used to attract new clients.

A Guide to Antique Bird Cages

It has been said that everything old is new again. So it is with bird cages. Antique bird cages are a popular addition to many houses and apartments. They fit in with many styles of decorating, including Victorian and shabby chic. Chinese antique bird cages are available for an Eastern flair.

If you are buying an actual antique, prepare to pay a hefty price. Be on the lookout, though, at garage sales and flea markets. Sometimes you can find an undiscovered treasure for mere pennies. More likely, though, you will have to pay.

Ebay is one place to check for antique bird cages. Before spending a large amount of money, make sure that your seller is reputable. One way to ensure this is to only buy from sellers with positive feedback.

Though authentic antique cages are pleasing to the eye, they are not the best home for your bird. Many antique bird cages are treated with chemicals or paints that can be toxic to your bird. If you buy a true antique, use it for decorative purposes only.

If you desire the look of antiques without the price tag, reproductions are also available. Replica antique bird cages often maintain the look and style of the original, but at a fraction of the cost. Victorian reproductions are especially popular. Select Home Décor is one source for reproductions. Department stores, home décor stores, and some home improvement stores also sell faux antique bird cages.

A Buyer’s Guide to Shorts

Shorts are fun, sporty, sexy and cool, all at the same time. They have come a long way from being clothing worn by young boys in the army in Europe and Britain, to the fashion accessory of today.

In parts of Europe men wore skirts, much like the Scottish kilt. Between the 14th to 16th centuries, they began wearing breeches. In the 19th century, knickerbockers, full trousers falling just below the knees, became popular. They were worn as sporting wear. Knee-length pants gained popularity in Europe and Britain, and boys around the age of three to eight began wearing shorts that were wider.

At this time, men in America wore only full pants. If they went swimming, they wore one-piece swimsuits. American boys were still wearing long pants after World War I. But shorts started making their presence in the warmer Southern states. The wealthier families were influenced by the fashions in England and private boys’ schools introduced pantsuits as part of their uniform.

The beginning of the 20th century saw the creation of the Bermuda shorts. The British military dressed their soldiers in clothes that could be worn in the warmer climates of their colonies. At the same time, changes in fabric also had men wearing shorter swimming trunks.

Shorts also entered the sports arena; football, hockey, rugby and many other sports were played wearing shorts. Bunny Austin made it acceptable in tennis, wearing them in the 1932 U.S. Men’s Championships at Forest Hills.

With time, women became liberated enough to begin wearing shorts in sports. In tennis, it was Senorita de Alvares who first wore a divided skirt in 1931; Alice Marble wore one in 1933.

There are many types of shorts worn today. Track shorts are common for running. Bun huggers, made from spandex or nylon, are worn by girls and women. However, some find these uncomfortable to wear because they can be quite revealing. Cycling shorts are designed, as the name suggests, for cycling. Nowadays many athletes wear compression shorts, made from nylon and Lycra and designed to support the waist, groin and thighs during vigorous physical activity. Athletes can also wear looser varieties of shorts.

For casual and comfortable wear, many prefer walking shorts and Bermudas, which are longer and have loops for a belt. These have a much more relaxed feel about them. Three-quarter length pants are also worn as comfort wear.

If a person wants to wear pants and then change into a pair of shorts easily, he could wear the zip-off shorts. These are ingeniously zipped off at the knee. Women who want to combine the look of a skirt with the comfort of shorts can wear the divided skirt or the ‘skort.’

The sexiest shorts are the short shorts or hot pants. Hot pants were created by John Herbert is in the early 20th century. When they first made their appearance, they created quite a stir. Pop stars and models keep their sexy look alive!

A Buyer’s Guide to Shirts

Shirts are typically described as a garment or a piece of clothing for the upper half of the human body. It would ideally consist of sleeves and a collar. Men’s shirts will usually have buttons down the front, and uniforms of all types generally follow the same pattern.

Shirts are worn in both casual and formal environments. The way it is worn is a good indication of the type of work a person is doing or the person’s current status. In a business meeting, the shirt would be tucked in and teamed with a tie and suit, but if the person is on vacation, then it would most likely be left untucked with a few top buttons open.

Shirts are further sub-divided into various types, and their styles, over a period of time, have generally been governed by some unseen fashion code, as well as the prevailing weather conditions of a given place. In colder climes one finds long sleeved shirts made of thick, warm material, and in warmer climes half-sleeved shirts are common.

T-shirts look like the alphabet letter ‘T’ and are named accordingly. They are made from different kinds of materials.

Various sporting events have given rise to shirts of a particular type and been named for the sport. Examples include the rugby shirt, the golf shirt, and the baseball shirt. However, a polo shirt has no connection with the game itself.

For ladies, the term shirt is a loosely used one where the definition would include tank tops, camisoles, blouses, tube tops, and halter tops, all of which conform to the basic design of a shirt but with a few modifications. There are some specific types which are self-descriptive like nightshirts, Hawaiian shirts or sweatshirts.

Shirts come in such a wide variety with different buttons, zippers, sleeve lengths and cuffs, collars,, lengths, and pockets.. The list is endless, so it’s up to you to choose.

A Brief History of the Mattress

Mattresses are a key component of bedding. Because most humans spend over a third of their lives sleeping, finding a quality mattress is important for a high quality of life. Normally comprised of foam and fibers, with metal springs on a wooden frame, mattresses help ensure a restful sleep.

Serta, Sealy, and Simmons are the three largest, most popular mattress brands in the USA.

Standard USA mattress sizes are Twin/Single (39” X 75”), Double/Full (54” X 75”), Queen (60” X 80”), King (78” X 80”). Other USA mattress sizes include Olympic Queen (66” X 80”), California Queen (60” X 84”), and California King (72” X 80”).

Mattresses typically require replacement after seven to fifteen years of use, or sooner, if the coils or frame have experienced noticeable wear and tear.

A Brief History of the Mattress

In the Neolithic period (8,000-6,000 B.C.), people migrated from sleeping on the ground to simple man-made beds and mattresses. These first resting structures were constructed of leaves and grass, held together with animal skin. Around 3,500 B.C., Persians invented the first “waterbeds,” made of goatskins filled with water. The more affluent inhabitants of the Roman Empire, circa 200 B.C., slept on mattresses filled with feathers. Steel coils, which now support the vast majority of mattresses, were not patented for this purpose until 1865.

Mattresses have enjoyed many advances in the past few decades, including the advent of air mattresses, foam mattresses, and “memory foam” mattresses. Increasingly, mattresses are being constructed from modern materials such as latex foam and polyurethane foam. In addition, those consumers seeking affordability and convenience have chosen futons and futon mattresses to ensure their good night’s sleep. And there has long been a core of waterbed enthusiasts who remain committed to waterbed mattresses.

A Brief History of Hawaiian Shirts

Bright in color and full of vivid design, Hawaiian shirts are an immensely popular way to introduce yourself – and your clothing – at parties, the pool or the beach. They have become an international symbol of Hawaii. Although they continue to increase in popularity, Hawaiian shirts are not a new trend or fad. In fact, the design of the popular shirts has been around for decades.

Hawaiian shirts got their start in the 1930s, when clothing manufacturers on the islands decided to produce a cloth that had a design unique to Hawaii. Watumull’s East India Store led the pack by hiring artist Elsie Das to create 15 hand-painted floral designs that were then printed onto silk. Unfortunately for the store, the designs were not supposed to be printed on heavy silk. Although the manufacturer did not print the shirts as had been requested, it turned out for the best – the heavy silk shirts became extremely popular in Hollywood. Movie stars, singers, and politicians all donned the prints. In the movie “From Here to Eternity,” Montgomery Cliff, Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, and Frank Sinatra all wore Hawaiian shirts. The craze has continued on for years. Tom Selleck was seen wearing Hawaiian shirts in “Magnum PI.”

Hawaiian officials have certainly encouraged the Aloha shirt craze. In 1947, the Honolulu Board of Supervisors passed a resolution, encouraging city and county employees to wear Hawaiian shirts from June 1 to October 31 each year. Further, every Friday in Hawaii is considered Aloha Friday, when locals and tourists alike wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt or dress with pride. The islands even have an official Aloha Week, where thousands of people dress in Hawaiian pride.

Today, Hawaiian shirts continue to be a symbol of relaxation in tropical paradise.

A Brief History of Grandfather Clocks

Since the beginning of civilization, humans have searched for a reliable way to keep track of the time. In the earliest days, months, seasons and years were tracked by careful monitoring of the phases of the moon. Later, the sun and stars were also used to help early people track the passing of time.

The Sumerians used the sundial to divide days into two-hour segments. The Egyptians created a device called Cleopatra’s needle to divide their days into two-hour segments while the ancient Romans devised a way of dividing time into night and day.

A pressing need for more precise measurements led to the invention of the water clock and then the hourglass. These inventions were limited as they relied on water and sand, respectively, to function. The search continued to search for a way of tracking time independent of the seasons or nature.

In 1582, Galileo discovered that a pendulum could be used to track time. He drew the first designs for a grandfather clock, though he did not build it. Finally, in 1656, Christiaan Huygens built the first known grandfather clock, putting Galileo’s discovery to use. Though the clock did not keep accurate time, it was a major breakthrough in timekeeping technology. Through the years, various inventors tried to improve on the design, but with little luck.

Finally, in 1670, William Clement discovered that the clocks worked better with a longer pendulum. Of course, this required a taller clock. Clement named his newly designed clocks long-case clocks. This was the predecessor of the grandfather clocks that we know today.

In 1875, Henry Work wrote the song “My Grandfather’s Clock” and the name stuck and finally, after many years in the making, grandfather clocks were born.

Today’s grandfather clocks rely on a pendulum attached to an anchor. The swinging pendulum causes the anchor to turn a gear, which in turn causes the clock to tick. A pair of weights further helps power the clock and keeps it from losing time. Although the technology has evolved over the years, the grandfather clocks of today still reflect the ingenuity of human’s earliest ancestors.
